Highgate Cemetery Photo Tour
With The Classic Camera and Jeremy Walker
Date: 15th of September 2025
Start time: 10:00 Finish time 16:00
Our entrance tickets are timed and we have to be at the cemetery by 10:30, a 5 minute walk from
Lauderdale House Café.
Please assemble at: Lauderdale House Café in Waterlow Park. What Three Words : placed.hammer.dishes
Use the Highgate Hill/ Dartmouth Park Hill entrance to the park, next to St Joseph’s Church. The
café is on the right as you enter the park, but slightly hidden!
If you are running late, you can go directly to the cemetery:
Highgate Cemetery, Swains Lane, London N6 6PJ
There is no public parking at the cemetery, please use public transport.
Underground. The nearest underground station is Archway, on the Northern Line. This is a 15 minute walk from
Lauderdale House Café.
Highgate Cemetery. For detailed information about Highgate Cemetery please visit: Highgate Cemetery
Facilities are limited at the cemetery. There are public toilets in both East and West cemeteries but
that is about it. There is often a coffee and snacks vendor in the courtyard at Highgate, but this is
not guaranteed. Apart from Lauderdale House, there are no shops or cafes nearby. You are
advised to bring a packed lunch.

Given the vagaries of the British weather please wear suitable footwear, preferably walking boots or similar and
waterproofs. Possibly a brolly if the forecast is unkind. We will go ahead no matter what the weather.
In terms of camera kit, one body and a 24-70 zoom or a combination of primes, 35,50,90 will cover most
eventualities although an extreme wide angle may give you something a little different. Please bring a tripod,
spare batteries, memory cards, cable release etc. If you have a polariser, bring it and if you have ND filters for
long exposures these can also be useful.
Both colour and black and white imagery works well but please also think about black and white infrared
images as these will work exceptionally well in the right conditions. For infrared shooting you will need an R72
red filter available from the likes of Wex or Amazon. Hoya is probably the most widely available brand.
Our aim is to spend the morning in the older, West Cemetery and then stop for lunch, followed by the afternoon
in the East cemetery. However, we can be flexible and we can stop for coffee and a rest and then re-enter at any
stage if needs be.
No doubt we have left out some important nuggets of information so please do not hesitate to contact us by
email or phone, info@jeremywalker.co.uk or mobile: 07974 913676. Andy at The Classic Camera can be
contacted on 0207 831 0777.

Highgate Cemetery with The Classic Camera and Jeremy Walker

Highgate Cemetery consists of nearly forty acres of tombs, monuments and headstones with
approximately 170,000 people buried in 53,000 graves. Opened in 1839, Highgate soon
became the fashionable place for burials and given the Victorian attitude towards death this
led to the creation of a wealth of Gothic tombs, memorials and mausoleums which make for
fascinating subject matter for the photographer.
At the turn of the Twentieth Century the fashion for burials slowly began to change and the
demand for elaborate plots at Highgate declined. In 1960 The London Cemetery Company
was declared bankrupt and the cemetery fell into terminal decline.
It is this ‘terminal decline’ that is possibly of most interest to the photographer. Overgrown
graves and crumbling tombs make for wonderful photogenic subjects. Although the grounds
are maintained by The Friends of Highgate Cemetery there are still acres of overgrown tombs
to be explored as well as some quite famous tombs such as that of Carl Marx.
The day is designed as a relaxed walk, with plenty of time to spend shooting at your leisure
with one of the country’s top landscape photographers on hand for advice, help and the
occasional prod in the right direction.
Limited to just six participants for a small, friendly and informal day’s shoot.
